Winemaker: Taras Ochota
Appellation: McLaren Vale, South Australia, Australia
Grape Varieties: Gamay
Gamay held a special place in Amber & Taras’ heart and so did hardcore punk music. Both of those things combine here with one of the finest new world (or any world) Gamays named after one of their favorite Aussie hardcore bands. The fruit for ‘The Price of Silence’ originally came from an incredible nearly 40-year-old vineyard but unfortunately that site succumbed to the devastating wildfires in the Hills in 2020. Amber and Taras had worked with the Eureka Vineyard in Woodside prior as it was a component of ‘Texture Like Sun’. There is less visible granite in the soil here than the previous site but that doesn’t take anything away from the perfumed aromatics and bony structure of this wine.
The fruit was hand-harvested and placed into small half-ton fermenters. Half of the grapes were fermented whole-bunch carbonic for three weeks and the other half fermented entirely whole-cluster but open top with gentle hand plunging for roughly a week. The lots were basket-pressed directly to 500L French puncheons where the wine aged for five months. The wine was then blended to tank to settle naturally and bottled without fining or filtration and only a small 40ppm hit of sulfur dioxide.
Tasting Note Smells like an amaro or chinato! Like that. Cola, cherry, cranberry, sarsaparilla, fennel, mint, wormwood. Pretty and silky in feel in the palate but all those amaro-like characters there too. So fine, light and beautiful in texture. Utterly delicious. Compelling.
The ochota barrels tale began on a surf trip, late 2000 along the Mexican west coast in a Volkswagen campervan. A final destination after traveling some of the world’s most amazing wine and surf regions, Taras and Amber Ochota conceived the idea to make beautiful holistic wines back home in South Australia.
After a mis-spent youth playing a rickenbakker bass in various punk bands (listen to Kranktus’ Heckler album), Taras became an Oenology graduate from Adelaide University, developing his craft in numerous vineyards and cellars around the world to then settle with Amber on 9.6 steep gorgeous acres tucked away, deep in the Basket Range of the beautiful Adelaide Hills.
Before this Taras worked as the European Flying Winemaker Consultant, concentrating on the Italian regions, Puglia, Abruzzo Sicily and further, for the Swedish wine importing company Oenoforos.
California was also a regular vintage destination, making wines with producers such as Kunin, Bonnacorsi, Arcadian, Schrader, Outpost and the famous Hitching Post’s label, Hartley-Ostini, from the movie ‘Sideways’.
Amber’s wine experience ranges from vintages in Italy, vineyard development and cellar door sales in the Adelaide Hills and coordinating production and wine analysis for Nordic Sea Winery in southern Sweden.
