The "Côte du Py" is the most prestigious of the six climates of the Morgon cru. This hill, with rounded shapes, culminates at an altitude of 358 m, a link between the towns of Villié and Morgon. The Côte du Py is a flavor, that of a Morgon that fills the mouth and engraves the memory. Its subsoil, rich in manganese and iron, gives this wine incomparable richness
The 4 ha of vines divided into several plots are exposed on the southern slope of the Côte du Py and dominate Morgon. In the subsoil, the shales disintegrate into a soil impregnated with iron oxide and manganese, called "rotten rock". On the surface, blue stones litter the ground and give more heat to the vines. Goblet pruning and sustainable cultivation for old vines. Fan pruning and grassing on young vines. Manual harvest for a traditional vinification in semi-carbonic maceration, vatting for 10 to 15 days with pumping over, shedding and punching down. Pneumatic pressing. Aging 12 months in wooden casks and 1/5 in barrels.
Mikael Gaget's story is a classic of generational change, the kind that we love. The son of a grape farmer in Beaujolais, he went to school for enology so he could take the family estate to the next level. After selling all their grapes since Mikael's great grandparents purchased a few hectares in the early 1900s, Mikael's father Maurice created the family's first winemaking domaine in 1980.
