Ganevat Cotes du Jura Chardonnay Champs Poids
Winemaker: Jean-François Ganevat
Appellation: Jura, France
Grape Varieties: Chardonnay
Jean-François Ganevat is one of the reference point producers and perhaps the most comprehensive expositor of the myriad terroirs of Jura. The Ganevat family has been farming vines here since 1650, and after working for his father and for Jean-Marc Morey in Chassagne-Montrachet, he returned to Jura to take his place in the family lineage. Ganevat, since joined by his sister Anne, makes a staggering range of wines, often numbering upwards of 35 cuvées in a typical vintage. The number of varietals is equally mind-boggling with seventeen different grapes making appearances in the Ganevat cellars. The "Champs Poids" bottling is 100% Chardonnay from a pure Bajocian limestone plot planted in 1986. The wine is aged for 24 months in foudre on its fine lees, giving it just the right combination of oak and richness. Nothing is out of place. Luis Gutierrez writes in Wine Advocate, "A visit chez Ganevat is a rollercoaster ride... where some kind of magic certainly goes on."
