A blend of three vineyards: Lilies and Tullah in Mclaren Flat (deep sand on clay) and Wood, the sandy ironstone ridge of Clarendon. Earthiness surrounds a heart of spice and rose.

James Erskine has embarked on a journey that could have many endings. A proponent of as close to natural winemaking and viticulture as possible, James understands the risks and rewards that come with ‘high risk’ winemaking.

All of the vineyards are managed by Fiona Wood and starting in 2015 all of the vineyards are 100% certified organic. Her viticultural belief is centered around minimal touching of the earth with many of the vineyards farmed biodynamically and all dry farmed. In the cellar all ferments are wild and each vineyard’s wine is made without the addition of yeasts, enzymes, fining agents, acid or tannins. None of the wines are filtered or fined and only sulphur is added post-ML on some of the wines with many bottled ‘sans soufre.’

James is crafting wines with incredible vitality, sex appeal and dangerous drinkability. These wines reflect place, soul, funk, passion and this it be declared, a new zeitgeist! He picks on acids first and foremost, when the acid makes the transition away from hard-edged and softens a touch is the day to pick. He is looking for a welcoming comfort in the fruit and not tight fruit as his use of stems during fermentation will add more tension. He never utilizes pumpovers or punchdowns but rather letting the fruit sit gently on the stems and skins for a longer time than most.

This is a blend of all three Grenache vineyards that Fiona Wood, and her green thumb, manages. Starting with the Foreman Block in the alluvial basin of McLaren Vale proper, moving to the white beach sands of Blewitt Springs' famed Genovese Vineyard and finishing on the steep slopes of Clarendon with the iron-rich Wood Vineyard. All three harmonize perfectly to give a glimpse into the Grenache world of James Erskine.

All fruit is organically farmed and hand harvested. The Foreman and Genovese fruit is fermented 100% whole bunch while the Wood Vineyard fruit is entirely destemmed. After fermentation the juice is pressed off of the skins and into neutral french barrique to rest of 11 months. After maturation the wine is blended to form this absolutely delicious and ethereal Grenache. No sulfur was added throughout the winemaking process.
